Egypt's OCI plugs $130 million into Rwanda power project
Methane gas power plant will be part of a plan to double electricity production in the impoverished central African country by 2012

Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) plans to invest up to USD130 million in Rwanda in the next three to four years to build a 50 MW methane power plant, a spokesman for the company said.
Only 14 per cent of Rwanda's population currently has access to electricity, according to the energy ministry. The country had an installed power capacity of just 69 MW in 2009 but plans to increase this to 130 MW by the end of 2012.
On Tuesday Rwanda and OCI signed a deal to construct and maintain a methane gas plant at Lake Kivu.
OCI's investment is estimated to be between $100m and £130m but has not been finalised, Mohamed Safeyeldin, Director Africa Operations for Orascom, told a news conference.
It is unclear whether OCI will be involved as an equity partner, or as a sole contractor of the project.
