No sabotage or terrorist attack on Egypt telecom cables, says official Telecom Egypt official promises internet and mobile services will be back shortly
A Telecom Egypt (TE) official has denied that a damaged cable is due to criminal attack or sabotage, adding that the company is transferring the services on other cables. "As we speak, the services are gradually coming back", the official told Ahram Online. On Tuesday, between 10 and 11am three fibre cables were damaged during construction works on the Cairo-Alexandria road, which partially cut mobile and Internet services. Mobile operators and some Internet providers rely on one of these cables to connect between their different locations. Affected regions, according to TE officials, are some parts of Alexandria, Sadat industrial city and many other regions in the northern west Egypt governorates. This damage comes two days after another cable in the area was cut. "This makes it harder to fix the problem promptly," says the official. The other two cables were used for international calls, but service was immediately transferred to alternative cables. Some mobile subscribers on all three Egyptian mobile networks, Mobinil, Vodafone and Etisalat, are facing connection issues with voice calls and the Internet. All BlackBerry services are damaged as a result of the broken cable. Mobinil and Etisalat were the first to report the problem on their Twitter accounts. "Hello everyone, there is a network problem, we will be investigating and we will update you about that as soon as it is fixed," Mobinil wrote.
