Democratic Coalition for Egypt rejects supra-constitutional guiding principles The 34-party coalition agrees with the constitutional guiding principles but reject it being implemented by Egypt's ruling military
The Democratic Coalition for Egypt, which includes 34 parties, including the Muslim Brotherhood and the Wafd (Delegation), have made a statement objecting to the supra constitutional "guiding principles," proposed by the Cabinet late Sunday. The next step is for Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to look them over for approval. The coalition objected to the guiding principles because they see it as tool to control the will of the people. The coalition argues that the main constitutional principles were already discussed and accorded upon, therefore it's not necessary to set up any guiding principles, insisting that the people should be the main source of authority. The head of the Wafd Party, El-Sayed El-Badawy, said that the coalition had already discussed and approved the 11 drafts discussed by cabinet as guiding principles for the constitution, including that issued by Al-Azhar, but that they should not be enforced as obligatory principles by the SCAF. The coalition emphasised that the people, who are the main source of authority, should not be controlled by any form or body, regardless of the name of that control. They also emphasised that the constitutional drafting committee should represent the political groups elected in parliament and those that are present in the Egyptian society as a whole. With regard to the coming elections, they feel capable of representing the sections in society in parliament and to win the majority of seats. In turn, it can assure that the constitutional principles agreed by the coalition will be applied. The coalition also insisted that the elections should be by proportional representation and not bysingle votes, to achieve the best outcome for this transitional stage. The group also thanked the military council for its role during Egypt's transitional period and the way by which they are handing over power, despite their reservations concerning some of the decisions it makes. The 34 parties assured that their coalition is not in opposition to any other coalition, but rather it is only an expression of the political diversity which exists in society, stressing that dialogue is necessary between the different groups. They added they won't lose the revolutionary spirit, but that demonstrations are not necessary right now. What's needed now is to build a political framework. Senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Saad El-Katatni and Mohamed El-Beltagy, confirmed that despite there being consensus amongst the coalition parties over particular constitutional principles that they refuse that any constitutional guiding or supra-constitutional principles be applied.
