PFLP rally for unity

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) called on Palestinian reconciliation and unity in a rally marking its 43rd anniversary Saturday.
The left-wing PFLP called on Hamas and Fatah to reconcile as thousands of their supporters gathered in Gaza's main stadium waving red flags and shouting slogans for unity.
The PFLP, which is the second biggest faction in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and opposes the peace accords signed with Israel, criticised both Fatah and Hamas for not resolving their political spat.
"The ongoing Palestinian split that resulted from Hamas-Fatah disputes has created a hard and complicated moment," said Jamil Majdalawi a senior PFLP leader as quoted in Israeli daily Haaretz. "People with vested interests are happy with the political division between Gaza and the West Bank."
He also noted the necessity of rebuilding the PLO in light of the deadlocked peace process.
Majdalawi said that "as long as the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem and the West Bank continues, the Palestinian leadership needs to review all its policies and strive to achieve unity."
