Teenage activist claiming police brutality accused of lying The Khaled Said Facebook page expressed doubts about Salma El-Sawy's alleged kidnap and torture by National Security forces
The Khaled Said Facebook page voiced doubts over activist Salma El-Sawy's allegations that she had been kidnapped and tortured by National Security forces. The page, which includes over 1.4 million users, initially demanded a quick investigation into the alleged incident and expressed support for 18-year-old El-Sawy, who first introduced herself as a member of the April 6 Youth Movement. The April 6 Movement then denied El-Sawy's claim to membership in their group almost immediately after. Later on, she made an appearance on ONTV's 'Akher Kalam' talk show, during which she came across to many Facebook commenters as a fame-seeker rather than a victim of state brutality. El-Sawy's side of the story included some “illogical” details, read a note posted on the Khaled Said page. “She does not have a picture of herself on the internet that would allow security to recognise her. “She is not a well-known activist, nor has she played major roles in any previous demonstrations to warrant being targeted like that ... The former State Security used to detain prominent activists and not unknown ones." The note went on: “The story itself is a bit strange so we got suspicious ... We are still waiting for the investigation results. If the story turns out to be bogus, legal actions must be taken, because making up such allegations is quite serious.” Shortly after the Facebook statement was released on Thursday, 9 June, El-Sawy said – contrary to her original claims – that she had not been tortured by security forces, but by others attempting to increase tensions between the people and the ministry of interior.
