The number of tourists visiting Egypt rose by 16.5 percent in May compared to the same month in 2014, according to the latest official figures. Egypt welcomed 894,600 foreign tourists in May, compared to 768,200 in the same period of the previous year, the state statistics agency CAPMAS reported Sunday. Around 43.9 percent of visitors in May came from Eastern Europe, mainly Russia at around 73.3 percent, while 30.7 percent were from Western Europe and 13.4 percent were from the Middle East. May also saw a 23.1 percent increase in the number of Arab tourists visiting, where 153,700 visited compared to 124,900 in May 2014. Egypt's tourism sector, which took a blow following the 2011 uprising, has seen a relative recovery in the last year, receiving 9.9 million tourists in 2014, up from 9.5 million in 2013.
