Lazar Markovic's first Premier League goal gave Liverpool a 1-0 win against 10-man Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Markovic put Liverpool ahead in the ninth minute from close range when he reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area after Fabio Borini was brought down. Markovic then hit the crossbar with a long-range volley in the 30th, but Liverpool did not turn its first-half dominance into a greater advantage. Sunderland's Liam Bridcutt was sent off in the 49th for two bookable offenses but his dismissal galvanized the host. Adam Johnson hit the crossbar with a long-range strike in the 52nd as his side stepped up its search for an equalizer. But Liverpool stifled Sunderland's pressure to take the three points.
