Zamalek coaching staff sitting tight after being defeated by Gouna Zamalek coaching staff will not quit after Al-Gouna defeat, Coach Hossam Hassan demands scheduling equality
Zamalek technical staff, headed by Hossam Hassan, will not quit after losing the game against Al-Gouna 2-1 in week 20 of the Egyptian Premier League last Tuesday, Hassan revealed after a meeting with the club president, Galal Ibrahim. Reports in the media asserted that the coaching staff will resign, following assistant coach Tarek Soliman's announcements during the post-match news conference: “We are seriously thinking about leaving. The technical staff did their best with the team, but the players did not live up to expectations,” said Soliman. Zamalek are still close to their first league title since 2004, as they are leading this season's table with 40 points, 2 ahead of runner-up, Ismaily, and 4 before their arch-rivals, Ahly, which lie third and will play their 20th round today against Ittihad of Alexandria. Although the Al-Gouna defeat is the first for Cairo giants in the domestic competition since August 2010 (Enppi 1-3) many supporters as well as sports journalists blamed the coaching staff. However, the coaching staff also lifted Zamalek to the top after they were threatened to be relegated last season. “The problem is not about what Tarek Soliman said, but rather the club board's neutral reaction to announcements that may shake the team,” sports critic Hassan El-Mistikawy said in his Thursday's article. In another context, former Ahly and Zamalek striker, Hossam Hassan demanded that all league matches be played at the same time of the day to ensure equality. Hassan requested his club to contact the Egyptian Football Association Competitions Committee on the matter. “Zamalek is negatively affected by holding their matches after Ismaily and Ahly,” The 44-year old tactician told a television programme.
