Last-gasp Ahly claim morale-boosting win ahead of Confed Cup final A late header by youngster Ramadan Sobhi gives a second-string Ahly side a 2-1 comeback win over lowly Nasr
Ahly, playing without a host of regular starters, scored at the death to avoid a stunning reverse at Cairo Stadium, beating lowly Nasr 2-1 to boost their morale ahead of Saturday's African Confederation Cup final. The Red Devils needed a diving header by youngster Ramadan Sobhi to secure a precious comeback win, their third straight Egyptian Premier League victory. They fell behind to a goal from Nasr's Mohamed Zizo on the stroke of halftime but veteran striker Emad Meteb, who came on as a second-half substitute, converted a penalty with five minutes remaining to level the score. Ahly moved to the sixth place in the league table with 14 points, four behind leaders and arch-rivals Zamalek who played a game more. Nasr remain at the bottom with a solitary point from nine games. The promoted outfit looked on course to claiming a stunning win, taking full advantage of many blunders from an inexperienced Ahly backline, which was porous in the first half. Ahly's Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido opted to rest several key players to have them fully fit when the team meet Ivory Coast's Sewe Sport in the first leg of the Confederation Cup final as they aim to become the first Egyptian side to win Africa's secondary club competition. Nasr were a stiff opponent, squandering some goal-scoring chances as goalkeeper Ahmed Adel blocked some goal-bound shots. The visitors deservedly went ahead just before the half-time whistle when Ahly's defender Sherif Hazem bizarrely allowed a tame long ball to elude him, with Zizo taking full advantage to send a superb overhead kick past the advancing keeper. Fruitful substitutions Nasr defended doggedly to preserve their lead in the second half but Garrido's substitutions for Ahly proved fruitful. Meteb replaced disappointing attacking midfielder Mohamed Farouk and right-back Basem Ali also came on to close gaps on the flank. Ahly pushed forward, laying siege to Nasr's area. They managed to level the score when Sherif Hazem was felled in the area, with Meteb making no mistake from the spot. Sobhi then dived to meet a Hussein Sayed cross with a superb header that went into the bottom corner to deny Nasr a historic win over their illustrious opponents.
