The term "well-behaved girl" is used roundly in Egyptian society. While it typically refers to a number of desirable qualities, many see it as describing a young woman who is submissive to societal norms without objection. This weekend, the performance BuSSy explores this notion with a collection of stories from Alexandria's young women and men. The team behind BuSSy describes a "'well-behaved girl" as someone who does not argue with society, who has no voice and who does not attract any attention to herself. In essence, a submissive girl. The performance builds on a storytelling workshop that began in Alexandria in February in collaboration with the Goethe Institute, where Alexandria's young men and women were encouraged to break through taboos of sexual violence and sexuality as well as share their personal experiences. The BuSSy Project has been active since 2006, originating at the American University in Cairo following a performance of the Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler. The performance is intended for an 18+ audience.
