Garrido enjoys winning debut as Ahly eye domestic double Juan Carlos Garrido is looking forward to his first trophy with Ahly as the Cairo giants reach the Egypt Cup semi-final following a win over lowly Ragaa on Thursday
Ahly gave Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido a winning debut as they remain on course for a customary domestic double despite losing some of their veteran players. The retirement of full-back Sayed Moawad and central defender Wael Gomaa in the final stages of the lengthy Egyptian season hardly affected a rampant Ahly side which won the Premier League title for the eighth consecutive time earlier this week following a 0-0 draw with Smouha in a title decider. The Red Devils, who are now mainly relying on some youngsters and inexperienced players, are also through to the Egypt Cup semi-final after a header from forgotten striker Emad Meteb, who had been out of action for several months due to injury, gave them a 1-0 win over lowly Ragaa in the quarter final. "Happy because we are in the next round. Now we have some days to get the right recovery and face the next round," Garrido said on his Twitter feed. "We´ll work to get the final," added the former Villarreal, Real Betis and Club Brugge coach who took over from caretaker manager Fathi Mabrou, under whom the club won their 37th league title despite some stuttering displays. Ahly will face Alexandria-based club Smouha in the last four. Arch-rivals and title holders Zamalek take on Wadi Degla in the other semi-final next week.
