Seven Egyptian doctors to be tried for patient's death The doctors are accused of medical negligence, leading to the removal of their patient's uterus and her subsequent death
Seven doctors at the Minya general hospital in Upper Egypt were sent to trial on Saturday on charges of medical negligence after the death of a woman giving birth in their care. The charges were filed by the head of the hospital's maternity ward Ahmed Montasser. According to Montasser's complaint, the doctors failed to carry out the correct medical procedures during childbirth, leading to complications that resulted in the necessary removal of the patient's uterus and subsequently her death. Reports of medical negligence are common in Egypt. Heba El-Ayouti, a 26-year-old woman, died last monthafter doctors gave her an unnecessary injection while she was undergoing a routine scan. An arrest warrant was issued for the doctor involved and four nurses on 14 June. Another recent incident that garnered media attention was the death of scriptwriter Nadine Shams in hospital in March. Her family has accused her doctors of making a mistake during an operation she had undergone days before her death. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/105516.aspx
