Swimming: Michael Phelps shares 100 butterfly title
Published in Ahram Online on 21 - 06 - 2014

Michael Phelps shared the 100-meter butterfly title Friday night in the Santa Clara Grand Prix after finishing second behind Olympic champion Nathan Adrian in the 100 freestyle.
Phelps, the 18-time Olympic champion swimming in his third meet since coming out from retirement, matched Tom Shields at 52.11 seconds in the butterfly.
Adrian won the freestyle in 48.17 seconds, and Phelps followed in 48.80.
''Having a double like that, I'm pleased,'' Phelps said. ''I wanted to go under 49 and I wanted to go under 52. I got half of what I wanted. This is the first time I had two races in the same day since I've come back.''
Phelps will compete in the 200 freestyle Saturday in the meet, a key tuneup event for the U.S. championships in August in Irvine.
''I'll see how I feel tomorrow,'' Phelps said. ''The turnaround time is a little tough but as a whole it was a pretty good day. I'll have to see how my body recovers. I have no idea what to expect.''
Adrian enjoyed racing against Phelps.
''It adds excitement to see Michael in any race,'' Adrian said. ''I know the American sprinters welcome him wide arms wide open. He's capable of swimming under 47.''
Kevin Cordes won the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.82, and Connor Jaeger took the 400 freestyle in 3:47.98.
In women's races, Olympic star Missy Franklin finished second in the 100 freestyle at 54.51, just behind high school senior Simone Manuel at 54.44. Manuel will attend Stanford in the fall.
''I want to swim the back and free for the opportunity to be on the relay team,'' said Franklin, who recently completed her first year at the University of California. ''Those are my favorite events.''
Micah Lawrence won the 200 breaststroke in 2:26.53, Lotte Friis took the 400 freestyle in 4:06.83, and Felicia Lee won the 100 butterfly in 59.62.
