BREAKING: Information ministry to be eliminated in new Egypt cabinet Critics have long called for the elimination of the ministry of information, which oversees state TV and radio, to allow more freedom of speech
Egypt's Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab announced on Monday that the yet-to-be sworn in cabinet will not include a ministry of information, reported Al-Ahram's Arabic news website. Since its establishment in 1952, the ministry has always been part of the cabinet formation. The minister of information overlooks government-owned TV and radio agencies and formulates general guidelines for broadcast. There have been recurring demands to eliminate the ministry so as to ease media restrictions and allow greater freedom of speech. The new government will be sworn into office on Tuesday, cabinet spokesperson Hossam Kaweesh announced on Monday. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/103868.aspx
