Former Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu has hailed Ivorian star Yaya Toure as the best midfielder in the world today. "If you say who is the best midfielder in the world now, for me I would say Yaya Toure. Not only in Africa, but the world. He is scoring goals like a striker, he carries the team [Manchester City] on his shoulders; when he isn't playing, Manchester City aren't Manchester City," the two-time African player of the year told African football on Thursday. The 31-year old gifted midfielder has been crucial for the Citizens in their bid for the local double (Premier League and League Cup) and the team seemed struggling when he has been away on rare occasions due to injuries. "When he is playing, Manchester City are flying, winning games, but not only that, he is like the master of the field - he opens up teams and scores goals. He doesn't score easy goals, he scores goals that strikers score. For a midfielder to score 20 goals means he is a special person. "If you check around the world, I haven't seen a midfielder at this moment that scores that type of goals that he scores," the Nigerian added. Toure has announced several times that he feels underestimated - in spite of his impressive contribution this season - because he is African. He has recently raised doubts about his future at Manchester City as he feels he doesn't get the appropriate attention at the club. However, he declined to make a statement and said he wants to focus on the World Cup now but will clarify his position afterwards.
