Clashes broke out on Friday at two major universities in Cairo between students and the police. Egypt's foremost Islamic university, Al-Azhar, saw supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and police forces engage in confrontations. Police fired teargas to disperse students who were throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails. The clashes erupted after students started a rally from inside the mosque of the university's dorm compound, reported Al-Ahram's Arabic news website. A similar scene unfolded at Cairo University, as pro-Morsi students at the university's dorms attempted to exit their compound in a demonstration to be met by teargas fired by police. The students responded by throwing rocks at police. Many adjacent streets were cordoned off by security. Several small pro-Morsi protests also took place on Friday in HAram and Omrania districts in Giza but were confined to side-streets due to heavy police presence in main roads, Al-Ahram said. On campus clashes have become common since the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi last year. Groups supporting Morsi called for anti-government protests ahead of presidential elections on 26-27 May, urging their supporters to hinder the vote. Two Brotherhood opponents are running in the elections; former army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi who led the popularly-backed move against Morsi, and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi who was one of Morsi's most prominent opponents before his overthrow.
