Cairo court sends 29 Morsi supporters to 5 years in prison for illegal protesting Defendants also slapped with fines of LE100,000 for holding a protest in Nasr City last December
The Nasr City misdemeanor court on Tuesday sentenced 29 supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi to five years in prison and fines of LE100,000 each for organising illegal protests last December. They were also charged with rioting, belonging to a terrorist organisation and destroying public and private property. The defendants were marching in Nasr City's Mostafa El-Nahas Street and blocking the road when police arrived at the scene, fired teargas and arrested them. Pro-Morsi protesters have refused to acknowledge Egypt's interim authorities and have held near-daily demonstrations in the nine months following the Islamist president's overthrow, often ending in violent confrontations with police and their political opponents. Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters, including Morsi himself and the group's top leadership, are currently detained or facing trial on a variety of charges, some of which could lead to death penalty. A new protest law passed in November imposes heavy jail terms and fines on protesters who do not notify authorities three days in advance of their demonstration's aims and demands. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/100115.aspx
