Israel's former Minister of Trade Benjamin Ben-Eliezar insists his recent declarations of offering amnesty to ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak are true. Ben-Eliezar said he met with Mubarak in Sharm el-Sheikh and offered to transfer him to the Israeli town of Eilat for treatment. He added that he also offered Mubarak political asylum by request of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The former Israeli minister renewed his claims about Israel's desire to help Mubarak during a meeting with Israeli television. The prime minister's office has denied the claim. Ben-Eliezar said he tried to convince Mubarak to respond to Israels' offer for treatment and to save himself, but that Mubarak refused out of national spirit. Ben-Elizar and two other Israeli officials were keen to contact Mubarak after his February 11 resignation. Mubarak was considered a key Israeli ally during his 30 years as Egypt's president. He was one of the main guarantees of the implementation of the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty.
