Members of the Egyptian-Sudanese Technical Authority said it is necessary to establish development projects such as dams to achieve the interests of all Nile basin countries. During its meeting in Khartoum, the authority said if upstream countries have been negatively affected by any projects they can take an official stance to amend such projects on the basis of international law. Hisham Kandeel, chairman of the authority, said the members confirmed that Egypt and Sudan will coordinate to adopt a common stance and strategy for the next stage. He added that the authority will work to strengthen confidence among the other Nile basin countries to achieve the interest of all peoples of the region. Kandeel said the authority discussed a plan to expand the authority's role and to develop it to face regional and international challenges. He stressed the necessity of protecting the water security of both countries, particularly because the world could suffer from water scarcity. The authority will play a critical role in the future, he added. He said the authority recommended a resumption of necessary studies for the development of common projects, especially in the wake of recent world developments. Kandeel added that Egypt should take into account the phenomenon of global warming, which affects the Nile's water, and should prepare suitable plans and policies to achieve water development in Egypt and Sudan.
