CAIRO: The grand imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayeb, met today with a delegation from the national Nasserite Party. The group expressed their support for Al-Azhar's latest document and al-Tayeb's efforts to revive it historic and religious role as the biggest Islamic reference. The grand imam and the delegation discussed the current situation in Egypt and the latest incidents in other Arab countries. They also discussed the expected role of Al-Azhar in demonstrating Islam's tolerance of religion, bridging the gap between Sunnis and Shias and fighting Zionism in the region. "We are all Nasserites even if we are not members of the party because we all originally come from Upper Egypt just like Gamal Abdel Nasser," said al-Tayeb. Al-Tayeb said the document can be accessed by the entire nation, and that Al-Azhar is opened to every one for meaningful dialogue. The Nasserites also showed appreciation for the document and considered it an important step in the history of Al-Azhar. They also said that Sheik Ahmed al-Tayeb has a great opportunity and deserves to have his name placed between the great imams of Al-Azhar such as Sheik Abdel Haleem and Sheik Shaltout. Al-Tayeb said that he was pressured to issue opinions that go against the Shias but he refused.
