Arabic: نوال السعداوي Born: Oct. 27, 1931 Nawal el-Saadawy is a prominent Egyptian writer, activist, and feminist. Much of her work has focused on women's rights and the violation of women's rights in the Arab world. Saadawy graduated as a medical doctor from Cairo University. She has written a number of books that defended women, such as "Women and Sex," which strongly criticized aggression committed against women's bodies. Saadawy refused to accept the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel that was signed in 1979, which led to her imprisonment in 1981 along with many other political activists and intellectuals. Saadawy participated in Egypt's January 25 Revolution, and later criticized the constitutional committee appointed to amend Egypt's 1971 Constitution because it included no women. In 2011, Saadawy was included in The Guardian's list of the 100 most important women in the world. She was also included on Newsweek's list of 150 ‘Women who Shake the World' along with three other Egyptian women: Gameela Ismail, Dalia Ziada, and Salma Said.
