Veteran defender Christian Panucci has been called up by Italy coach Roberto Donadoni for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against France and Ukraine. Roma's Panucci, who hasn't played for the Azzuri since 2004, is set to fill up the void left by the retirement of Alessandro Nesta and injuries hitting Marco Materazzi and captain Fabio Cannavaro. However, Real Madrid defender Cannavaro was also called up, with Donadoni hoping he can catch Ukraine's game. Bayern Munich's injured striker Luca Toni was also included in the squad. Italy are second in Group B on 16 points, two behind leaders France, whom they will clash with at the San Siro on September 8th. France won the Paris game 3-1.
