International referee Essam Abdul-Fattah said the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) promised him to manage the Cairo derby on Sunday, before backing out and assigning the task to Scottish referees. Abdul-Fattah, who attributed EFA's decision to the extreme fanaticism of the Ahli and Zamalek fans, revealed that running the derby would've been easier then managing a match between Tunisia and Morocco, or Argentina and Brazil. The Egyptian referee also expressed his relief that Ahli were drawn to Group A in the African Champions League alongside two Arab clubs. "Ahli are very lucky to have been drawn against two Arab clubs, it is very hard to travel to west and south Africa," Abdul-Fattah told FilGoal.com exclusively on Saturday. Abdul-Fattah is the only Arab referee chosen in the World Cup that will kick-off on June ninth.
