About nine per cent of Egypt's 82 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, the Ministry of Health said Friday, adding that it still fears that the numbers may grow. "The recent statistics showed the number of Egyptians suffering from the chronic disease diabetes has reached 13.7 million," the Ministry added. It added that diabetes was a public health threat in Egypt because of aggravating local factors. Health officials are taking preventive measures including a nationwide campaign for educating people against the risk of diabetes as well as giving counselling and support to patients and their families, the Ministry said.
