Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayyeb Thursday ordered the formation of a legal panel to review a law organising affairs of the world's most prominent seat of Sunni Islam, opening the door for the election of the head of the religious establishment. "A legal committee to be headed by Judge Tareq el-Bishry will review Law 103/1961, which organises Al-Azhar's relation with the State and a scholar committee will also be formed," el-Tayyeb told reporters. He added that the reformation of the committee would help elect the Sheikh of Al-Azhar through a fair and transparent process, supervised by an ulema panel. "These decision are taken to help Al-Azhar keep up with the revolution and benefit from its gains," said el-Tayyeb, who was appointed last year by ousted President Hosni Mubarak. The top Muslim cleric welcomed dialogue with all political leanings to help shape the future of Egypt.
