BUDAPEST - Once communist Hungary has promised to give Egypt the benefit of its experience in switching from dictatorship to democracy, Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi said Wednesday. There are 'many similarities' between Hungary's transition to a free market democracy in 1989 and the events currently unfolding in Egypt, Martonyi told the state news agency MTI. He was speaking after a meeting in Cairo with Egypt's new foreign minister, Nabil al-Arabi. "We offered to share our Hungarian experiences gained during the change of system, from changing the constitution to organizing parliamentary elections," Martonyi said. The foreign ministers also discussed changes in the Arab world, the Middle East peace process and Libya, he said. The Hungarian foreign minister flew to the Egyptian capital on Tuesday, representing Hungary as current holder of the six-month European Union presidency, for talks with senior officials and opposition leaders. After meeting his Egyptian counterpart, Martonyi also met the secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, who has said he plans to run for president of Egypt in elections expected later this year.
