A young Egyptian committed suicide by hanging himself in the coastal city of Alexandria on Sunday. Al-Qabbari Hospital informed the Alexandria police that the 19-year-old young student had arrived dead after hanging himself, according to medical officials. During interrogation, Islam Mohamed's mother said that upon arrival home she found her son hanging from the ceiling of their house after he had hanged himself using her scarf. The agonised mother, assisted by neighbours, hurriedly carried the young man to the nearest hospital, apparently hoping he still alive. Initial investigations revealed that Mohamed had suffered from family problems as his parents were separated, and even he had problems with his mother. Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior had referred eight police guards of the People's Assembly (the Lower House of the Egyptian Parliament) to a disciplinary panel due to a series of suicide attempts over the past days. Al-Wafd opposition newspaper reported that the decision had been taken for the officers' "carelessness and inaction" for not thwarting the self-immolation attempts.
