CAIRO-Egypt's Chief Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has refused to investigate a complaint filed against political dissident Ayman Nour accusing him of "tranishing the reputation" of President Hosni Mubarak's younger son, legal sources said on Friday. Last week, a group of lawyers affiliated to the ruling National Democratic Party lodged a complaint with the Prosecutor-General against Nour, the founder of the opposition party Al Ghad, accusing him of slandering Gamal Mubarak and hindering a pro-Gamal campaign for presidential candidacy. Nour, who was released from prison last year after spending almost four years on charges of forgery, has recently launched a campaign countering Gamal's campaign titled "Egypt is too big for you". In turning down the lawsuit, the Chief Prosecutor said that under the law, the one who suffered the alleged damage should himself file the complaint. "The date of the presidential elections has not been set yet. Moreover, the claimed damage cannot be verified," added the Chief Prosecutor in a statement. Opposition claims that President Mubarak, who has been in power for almost 30 years, is grooming Gamal, a banker-turned-politician, to suceed him. Both Mubaraks have vehemently denied such claims. Mubarak has yet to say if he will seek a sixth term in 2011 presidential elections.
