Egypt's Salah still a doubt for World Cup opener
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 12 - 06 - 2018

GRONZY, June 12, 2018 (News Wires) - Egypt forward Mohamed Salah remains a doubt to face Uruguay in their World Cup opener at Yekaterinburg on Friday, the country's football association has said.
The Liverpool player, who sustained a shoulder injury in the Champions League final against Real Madrid last month, took part in light training on Monday but the Egyptian FA's managing director Ehab Lehita said it was too early to say whether he would play against the South Americans.
"He is gradually getting better. However, I cannot confirm today that he will play in the first match," Lehita said of the 25-year-old, who scored 44 goals for Liverpool last season.
"All I can say is that we hope he will play in this match."
Egypt also face Saudi Arabia and hosts Russia in Group A.
Under heavy rains, Egypt's national football team held a training session one hour ahead of Iftar (fast-breaking) on Monday.
The holy fasting month of Ramadan will end Thursday, a day before the Pharaohs meet the La Celeste.
The Egyptian team's star Mohamed Salah took part in the training but also held some separate exercises under the supervision of the medical team.
It is not clear yet whether Salah will be able to play with the Egyptian team against Uruguay on Saturday.
The 25-year-old winger suffered a shoulder injury during last month's Champions League final against Real Madrid. Salah has been undergoing rehabilitation therapy since then.
Egypt will take on hosts Russia on June 19 before facing Saudi Arabia in their final group stage game on June 25.
Manager of the national football team Ihab Leheta said Monday it is early to decide if Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah would be fit for Egypt's opener in the FIFA World Cup against Uruguay.
Addressing a press conference, Leheta affirmed that Salah continues to improve after an injury in his team's Champions League final against Real Madrid.
Salah took part in an individual training session on the playground earlier in the day, the team manager said.
The player will be back to the squad just after ensuring full recovery, he added.
The Pharaohs have not reached the World Cup finals since 1990.
