Egypt's PM attends UN's 80th anniversary meeting in New York
Published in Daily News Egypt on 22 - 09 - 2025

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Monday participated in a high-level meeting at the UN General Assembly to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
Madbouly, who is attending on behalf of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, took part in the event as part of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the General Assembly, held under the theme "Better Together: 80 Years and Beyond for Peace, Development, and Human Rights."
The event began with a speech by the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, who spoke about the founding principles of the UN and its charter following World War II. She noted the challenges the world faces today, which underscore the relevance of this year's theme.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also addressed the meeting, discussing the organisation's original goals, particularly in achieving peace and security and protecting civilians. He said the world today is facing a violation of those principles, citing the situation in Gaza and the challenges of climate change as examples. Guterres stressed that these challenges would continue and require unity among all nations.
Several former heads of state, including those from Liberia and Norway, also delivered speeches on the values and principles of the U.N. and the importance of upholding them.
The commemoration, which saw wide participation from heads of state and government and UN officials, serves as a platform to reflect on the achievements of the UN over the past eight decades and to explore necessary developments to enhance its ability to confront current international challenges. It also aims to refine its pivotal roles in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, respecting human rights, and consolidating global governance.

Moreover, Madbouly attended another meeting marking the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.

The meeting celebrating the 30th anniversary of the historic Beijing conference of 1995 aimed to review the progress made since then, highlighting achievements and ongoing challenges in advancing gender equality globally. Egypt, which participated in the drafting of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, continues to advocate for women's empowerment at the national, regional, and international levels, a statement from the prime minister's office said.

The event, held under the theme "Recommitment, Resourcing, and Accelerating Implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action," demonstrates a continued international commitment to protecting and promoting women's rights in integration with efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
