Egypt to host 'Sudan Neighbours Summit' to settle ongoing conflict
Published in Daily News Egypt on 09 - 07 - 2023

Egypt will host a summit of Sudan's neighbouring countries this week, to discuss ways to end the current conflict and its negative repercussions on neighbouring countries, according to a statement by the official spokesperson of the Egyptian presidency on Saturday.
The summit, which is expected to be held on Thursday 13 July, aims to reach effective mechanisms with the participation of neighboring countries, to settle the crisis in Sudan peacefully, in coordination with other regional and international tracks to resolve the crisis.
The statement stated that the invitation to the summit comes: "In light of the current crisis in Sudan, and in the interest of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to formulate a common vision for the countries directly neighboring Sudan, and to take steps to solve the crisis and stop the bloodshed of the Sudanese."
It also highlighted Egypt's desire "to limit the continuing grave effects of the crisis on neighboring countries and the security and stability of the entire region."
Meanwhile, the United Nations warned on Saturday that Sudan is about to descend into an "all-out civil war" that could destabilize the entire region. The UN condemned the air raid on the Dar al-Salam area in Omdurman, which killed 22 people and wounded a large number of civilians. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) accused the Sudanese army of carrying out the raid.
On Friday, the Sudanese army launched heavy air raids in various parts, concentrated north of Khartoum in the vicinity of Jisr al-Halfaya and Jisr Shambat, and the neighbourhoods of Maamoura and Arkuit in eastern Khartoum. The bombardment extended to eastern Omdurman, where the radio and television building witnessed aerial bombardment and heavy artillery.
Despite confirming that there is no meeting between Sudanese Army Commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hemeti) anywhere in the near future to continue the escalation, the political advisor of Hemeti, Youssef Ezzat, confirmed that the work is ongoing to consolidate the ceasefire
He added that the mediation efforts of the US and Saudi Arabia are still ongoing, stressing that their position is positive regarding the Arab and regional initiatives at hand.
In the meantime, the Saudi-US mediation efforts are ongoing to bring the war rivals to the dialogue table in order to fulfil the obligations they made to reach a ceasefire.
