Sudan: Egypt's President, UN Chief call for cessation of hostilities
Published in Daily News Egypt on 15 - 04 - 2023

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi received a phone call from the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the latest development in Sudan.
Al-Sisi expressed Egypt's deep concern over the developments of the situation in Sudan, following the ongoing clashes there.
He stressed the seriousness of the negative repercussions of these developments on the stability of Sudan, which is going through a delicate historical moment, which calls for the utmost wisdom. He called on the Sudanese parties to give priority to dialogue and national consensus and to uphold the higher interests of the Sudanese people.
Guterres affirmed his keenness to communicate with the President in light of the active and pivotal role of Egypt in maintaining security and stability in the region, especially with regard to supporting the transitional path in Sudan.
He called on all Sudanese parties to stop hostilities, restore calm, and start the dialogue to resolve the current crisis.
Guterres pointed out that the escalation of the fighting will have catastrophic effects on civilians and exacerbate the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.
Heavy fighting has erupted in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the notorious paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting comes as tensions have been escalating over plans to integrate the RSF into the army.
The army has previously warned against the RSF deployment in Khartoum and other cities without its approval.
