The United Nations (UN) condemned the attack that targeted peacekeepers in Mali and killed two Egyptian soldiers. This was the second attack against peacekeepers in Mali in three days. According to the UN, "The blue helmets were killed and others injured when their armored vehicle was targeted by an explosive device in central Mali." UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the incident was the sixth targeting the UN mission since 22 May. "UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on peacekeepers that are only carrying out their mission in Mali in extremely difficult circumstances," he said. Last Wednesday, a logistics convoy of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) came under direct fire for almost an hour from suspected members of a terrorist group. The attack killed 2 Egyptian officers, and injured four Jordanian peacekeepers, one of whom died of his wounds after being evacuated. In Cairo, the Egyptian Armed Forces mourned the Egyptian peacekeeping troops in Mali, extending sincere condolences and sympathy to their families. The Armed Forces stressed that its role in maintaining international peace and security stems from its full belief in the importance of peace, coexistence and the elimination of terrorism under the umbrella of the United Nations.
