UN Special Envoy to Libya Bernardino Leon arrived in Cairo on Monday and met with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Arab League General Secretary Nabil El-Araby, according the Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zaid. The meeting was held to discuss the recent development in Libya, with other influential Libyan figures in Cairo also attending the meeting. During the meeting, Shoukry, Al-Araby and Leon discussed plans to salvage the Skhirat agreement between Libyan factions, and plans to encourage Libyan parties to over the obstacles facing the formation of the National Unity Government brokered by the UN, Abu Zaid added. Leon expressed his gratitude towards the Egyptian role to support peace, stability and national reconciliation in Libya. Last week, Leon announced in a press conference that the formation of a unity government in Libya will continue, saying: "[I am here] today to insist that the process goes on; [there is] no chance for groups or personalities to hijack the process." Earlier this month, Leon had announced the plan for a national unity government in Libya, but the internationally-recognised parliament in Tobruk rejected it, saying the UN refused to exclude the amendments added by the Islamist authorities in Tripoli without its consent.
