Tagammu calls on Wafd to review alliance with Freedom and Justice Party
Published in Daily News Egypt on 17 - 07 - 2011

CAIRO: Al-Tagammu Party accused in a statement Sunday Islamist political currents of "incitement" against protesters in Tahrir Square and warned Al-Wafd Party against entering an electoral alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP).
The party said that Islamist groups revealed that they refuse any attempts to establish a civil state and refused any guarantees against the "Brotherhood, Salafi, Islamic Jihad project."
"Let's adopt a unified stance to demand drafting a constitution first or at least have constitutional principles that guarantee citizenship and economic and social rights for Egyptians," the statement read.
The Democratic Alliance, called for by Al-Wafd and the Muslim Brotherhood's FJP, comprises parties from the left and far right, bringing together proclaimed liberals and Islamists.
It includes Al-Wafd, Nasserist, Al-Ghad, Al-Karama, Al-Tagammu, Labor, Freedom and Justice, Al-Geel, Al-Ahrar and the Egyptian Arab Socialist parties, as well as, Al-Fadila and Al-Tawheed Al-Araby Salafi parties.
The Alliance proposed a draft law for the PA elections and a bill of constitutional principles to guide the work of a constituent assembly that will draft a new constitution. The group also said that they had agreed on mechanisms for contesting legislative elections in a unified list.
"The real reason why the FJP joined the alliance is to compete in the elections within a unified list regardless of the priorities of democratic transition," the Tagammu statement said.
The leftist party demanded a unified stance by political powers against this and said it will continue working on bringing together national democratic currents.
