TEL AVIV: Tel Aviv City Council has rejected a proposal to put Arabic on the city's official emblem, which currently has Hebrew and English. Activists say the refusal is part of the ongoing desire to push out Arab-Israelis from integrating into society. Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said during the council meeting Monday that Arabs comprise only four percent of the city's population. Councilman Ahmed Mashrawi had pushed for the Arabic to be included, saying the unification of Tel Aviv and Jaffa in 1950 led to the blotting out of Arabic history in the city. “The Arab community of Jaffa is today a minority in the city, but it has a glorious history in Jaffa and it is fitting that it be honored by putting the name in Arabic on the municipality logo," Mashrawi said last week, in comments published by The Jerusalem Post.
