DUBAI: The first ATM established for the visually-impaired in the Middle East has begun functioning in the United Arab Emirate's city of Sharjah. The ATM was established by the Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB) and was placed near the Emirates Association for the Blind in Mueillah, near University City, Sharjah, a statement from the bank said. The recently deployed ATM has a Braille keypad, a high resolution screen and a voice supported interface with headphone capability for superior privacy. “The machine moreover has three security cameras rather than just the one that most ATMs have,” it said. SIB together with Computer Network Systems (CNS), Wincor Nixdorf s agent in the UAE, worked on the deployment. This is their second teamwork on ATMs for the disabled. The two previously had worked together to set up a wheelchair-accessible ATM. In India's Ahmedabad earlier this year, a similar ATM was set up for the blind, the first of its kind in India.
