CAIRO: Egypt's Religious Endowments ministry, or Dar al-Iftaa, has echoed al-Azhar on pronouncing the planned general strike on February 11 by Egyptian activists and labor unions as “destructive.” It said in a statement on Wednesday that it “urged Egyptians to be more rational and act more wisely by choosing to serve the higher national interests and turning their back to destructive calls for staging a general strike on Saturday.” The “house” also said that Islam prohibits “calls for general strikes aiming at harming people's interests and lives and causing national economic and social stability.” Some 120 organizations and movements have announced their participation in the nationwide strike scheduled for Saturday and hope for the day of civil disobedience to push the country toward democratic transition without the military junta in power. “Peaceful public protests are admissible so long as the means and the end are noble,” the ministry said according to the statement.
