CAIRO: Vox Telecom is planning to launch a new low-cost broadband service in South Africa in order to improve access in rural and remote areas. The service will be launched in June. Vox Telecom expects to sign up nearly 40,000 subscribers in the first three years of operations. The deal was made in agreement with the Abu-Dhabi based Yahsat, who will provide the South African endeavor with space on the YahClick satellite it is launching next month. The satellite will provide service in South Africa in places where traditional telecom does not reach. “YahClick is a perfect broadband option for those who can't get ADSL service, or who need a backup service in case of outages,” said Jaques Visser, Vox's project manager. “Satellite has traditionally been seen as an expensive option that's only suitable for remote sites of large enterprises,” he said. “But the technology has changed so much in recent years that it's a real option as a primary broadband connection.” VOX will sell the service through existing resellers and subsidiaries such as @lantic and Vox Telepreneur.
