A recent Israeli public opinion poll shows Israelis are supportive of the upcoming United Nations decision on the Palestinian statehood bid launched by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas this week, even if it means accepting its existence. The poll, conducted by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah, questioned both Israeli and Palestinians on what they think of the statehood bid that was presented to the UN and will be discussed on the September 23. 70 percent of Israelis said the Jewish state should support the decision of the UN to recognize a Palestinian state, while 83 percent of Palestinians answered the same. 79 percent of the Israelis surveyed and 77 percent of Palestinians said they think the United States would fulfill its promise on vetoing the decision if it passes goes to the Security Council on Friday. According to the poll, 26 percent of Palestinians supported a return to the armed struggle against the Jewish state, while 37 percent said they believe non-violent resistance could be successful and beneficial to the Palestinian cause and 30 percent supported the return to the negotiation table with Israel.
