CAIRO: At least four people were killed and 150 injured in clashes between street vendors in the Cairo business neighborhood of Moski on Saturday night around 6 pm local time. The violence was the result of a dispute over display areas in the neighborhood, local Egyptian newspapers reported. According to eye witnesses, 8 tanks, 6 police vehicles and 10 central security trucks converged on the area after residents had called the security forces. They also reported that guns, knives and Molotov Cocktails were used in the clashes. Security is now blocking off the area and the side streets leading to the busy square. The violence comes ahead of Ramadan, the busiest time of the shopping year for Egypt as locals purchase numerous trinkets and gifts ahead of the holy month of fasting. It was not clear if the dead were vendors or bystanders. BM
