Leaders across the globe are chiming in on the aftermath of Hosni Mubarak resigning his power over to the military. They are calling for a smooth transition to democracy after 18 days of anti-government protests brought down the dictator of 30 years. Ban Ki-moon said, “I respect what must have been a difficult decision taken in the wider interest of the Egyptian people. At this historic moment I reiterate my call made as recently as last night for transparent, orderly and peaceful transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people and includes free, fair and credible elections leading to the early establishment of civilian rule. “ Catherine Ashton, EU Foreign Policy Chief, said, “To say to those who are now charged with being the guardians of the transitional period that we have high expectations that they will deliver for the people. And that the European Union will be there to offer its support.” David Cameron said, “Egypt now has a really precious moment of opportunity to have a government that can bring the country together. As a friend of Egypt and the Egyptian people we stand ready to help in any way that we can. We believe it must be a government that starts to put in place the building blocks of a truly open, free and democratic society.” BM
