Algerian film “Hors la Loi” (“Outside the Law”) has been nominated for an Oscar in Best Foreign Film, the Academy announced on Wednesday. Directed by Rachid Bouchareb, the film stirred controversy at the 2010 Cannes film festival because it looks at the Algerian war of independence from the Algerian perspective. Should the film win at the Oscars in February, it will be a first for Algeria. Nine other foreign films have been shortlisted for 2011′s award: ” Incendies” (Canada); “In a Better World” (Denmark); “Dogtooth” (Greece); “Confession”(Japan); ” Biufiful”(Mexico); “Life, about All” (South Africa); “Tambien la Lluvia” (Spain) and “Simple Simon” from Sweden. The final five nominees should be announced next week. BM
