Egypt's natural gas sector has returned to positive growth after years of decline, with production rising in August for the first time in three years, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy said on Thursday. Speaking at the 27th Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, chaired by Libya, Badawy said the recovery reflects government reforms, new strategies, and incentives to attract investors. He noted that major energy companies including Eni, Shell, BP and TotalEnergies have announced new investment plans to explore and develop Egypt's gas resources over the next five years. The Zohr field alone contributes about 23% of the country's total gas output, he said. Badawy highlighted Egypt's efforts to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure through floating storage and regasification units in Ain Sokhna and Damietta, reinforcing its position as a regional energy hub linking Africa, the Middle East and Europe. He reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to the GECF's goals of sustainable energy production and equitable access, and thanked Qatar and Libya for hosting and leading the meeting.
