Egypt on Monday called for an overhaul of the international debt system as it co-hosted, with Zambia, a session on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly to advance the launch of a platform for borrower countries. Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty said developing nations face mounting debt burdens, surging borrowing costs and climate-related challenges that are slowing progress toward sustainable development. The platform, born out of the Sevilla Commitment adopted at the Fourth UN Conference on Financing for Development in 2025, seeks to unify the positions of borrowing countries, foster dialogue, and strengthen their representation in sovereign debt negotiations. Abdel-Atty urged swift, collective action to improve the international debt architecture, boost debt sustainability for developing economies and avoid a global debt crisis.
