INTERVIEW: Big 5 Construct '24 Egypt poised to capitalise on booming construction market
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 24 - 06 - 2024

With Egypt's economy projected to reach nearly $600 billion by 2028, fueled by a surging construction sector, Big 5 Construct Egypt promises a vibrant platform for driving further growth, Mehtap Gürsoy of dmg events told Amwal Al Ghad English.
A Thriving Construction Landscape
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and ABiQ, Egypt's GDP is on track for a significant leap, with forecasts predicting a rise from 3.6 per cent in 2024 to over 6 per cent by 2028. This economic boom is accompanied by a thriving construction industry, currently valued at $88.5 billion, and anticipated to achieve an average annual growth rate exceeding 9 per cent by 2028. Notably, construction contributes approximately 12 per cent to Egypt's GDP.
Big 5 Construct: A Hub for Collaboration and Innovation:
Mehtap Gürsoy, Portfolio Director – Construction at dmg events, organizer of the Big 5 Construct Egypt, highlights the event's significance: "As Big 5 Construct Egypt returns this year, it continues to demonstrate the nation's increasing attractiveness in the construction industry by bringing together key businesses for three days of business-making and collaboration."
Gürsoy said the event boasts over 300 exhibitors showcasing products and services across nine categories:
1. building materials,
2. construction tools & personal protective equipment (PPE),
3. mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP),
4. digital construction,
5. windows, doors & facades/special construction,
6. HVAC R,
7. building interiors & finishes,
8. urban design & landscape,
9.
It's expected to attract 20,000 construction and engineering professionals eager to network, discover groundbreaking solutions, and forge new partnerships, she added.
More Than Just an Exhibition:
Big 5 Construct Egypt extends beyond just an exhibition floor. It facilitates business meetings, fostering potential partnerships, joint ventures, and collaborations that can lead to strategic alliances and expanded business networks. Additionally, the event encourages cross-industry collaboration, paving the way for innovative partnerships that leverage the expertise of different sectors.
Celebrating Innovation and Project Excellence:
The event hosts Big 5 Egypt Impact Awards, which recognise outstanding achievements within the construction industry. These prestigious awards celebrate innovation and project excellence across 19 categories, honoring companies pushing the boundaries and driving positive change, Gürsoy noted.
Mobilising the Global Market and Supporting National Industries
Gürsoy elaborates on the critical role Big 5 Construct Egypt plays in mobilising the global construction market and supporting national industries: "The exhibition attracts participants from across the globe, including leading companies, experts, and professionals from the construction industry. This international presence helps to bring international attention and investment to Egypt's construction market."
The event serves as a platform for showcasing Egypt's construction capabilities and projects, boosting trade and export opportunities for Egyptian construction materials and services, and integrating the national market with the global economy, she explained. Local businesses gain visibility, promoting locally manufactured goods and bolstering the national construction industry. Additionally, the event facilitates interaction with international buyers, suppliers, and investors, opening doors for business development, partnerships, and increased sales for national industries.
A Global Reach
This year's edition witnesses participation from 20 countries, including major players like China, Germany, Italy, and India. Five dedicated country pavilions (China, Greece, Germany, Italy, and Türkiye) further showcase a diverse range of global innovations, Gürsoy stated.
Big 5 Construct's journey doesn't end in Egypt. After a successful run in Cairo, the event continues its global tour, with upcoming editions in Nigeria and Kenya. The year culminates with the flagship Big 5 Global event in Dubai, UAE.
Knowledge Hub and Future-Focused Initiatives:
Big 5 Construct Egypt also prioritises knowledge sharing and education. Gürsoy referred to Big 5 Talks, which present informative and practical learning sessions under themes like technology, project management, sustainability, and facilities management.
The Bokra Innovators programme specifically caters to students, offering interactive workshops, learning opportunities, competitions featuring student-led innovations, and a chance to explore the latest advancements shaping the industry.
The co-located Egypt Infrastructure & Water Expo further enriches the experience with the Infra360 and Water360 sessions. Gürsoy said these sessions feature discussions led by experts, industry leaders, and policymakers, delving into crucial aspects of infrastructure and water development, aligning with national development plans for these sectors. Additionally, a high-profile government panel discussion with representatives from the public and private sectors will address the future of infrastructure and water development in Egypt. Delegations from Saudi Arabia, UK, and Qatar are also expected to participate.
With its focus on innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, Big 5 Construct Egypt stands poised to play a pivotal role in capitalising on Egypt's booming construction market, fostering sustainable growth and propelling the industry towards a brighter future, Gürsoy concluded.
