Hundreds of people have taken to the streets in the Egyptian capital of Cairo to call for national unity after recent deadly sectarian violence in the country. During the “Unity" rally on Tuesday, the demonstrators marched to Egypt's top church in Cairo, demanding unity between the country's Muslims and Coptic Christians. The rally was organized by a number of political parties and groups, including Egypt's main opposition bloc, the National Salvation Front, and the left-wing Popular Current coalition. Clashes broke out on Friday after Christian children drew a crucifix on the front wall of a Muslim religious institute in the Qalyubiyah governorate in Cairo. At least eight people were killed and tens of others injured in the clashes. President Morsi issued a statement on Sunday, condemning the violence and calling for “an immediate investigation" into the incident.
