Construction of a significant offshore photovoltaic (PV) project commenced on Sunday in Lianyungang, eastern Jiangsu Province, China, the Science and Technology Daily reported Monday cited by Xinhua. The 2 million kW PV demonstration project, led by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), integrates PV and nuclear power. This integration aims to minimise the impact on the marine ecosystem and provide more clean energy to nearby cities. The project is slated to connect to the grid for the first time in September 2024 and reach full capacity by 2025. Over its 25-year operation period, it is expected to generate an average annual on-grid electricity of 2.234 billion kWh. This output could satisfy the annual production and domestic electricity needs of approximately 230,000 people in moderately developed countries. Furthermore, the project is expected to save about 680,000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.77 million tons annually.
