Alexandria - Two trains have collided head-on in Alexandria, Egypt, killing at least 36 people, and injuring 123 others according to Egypt's ministry of health officials. Dr. Khalid Mujahid, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, said that the death toll is high as the crash wreckage is being cleared from the railways.
He pointed that the dead and the injured have been immdeiately transferred to hospitals in the vicinity of the coastal Governorate.
Efforts are intensified and exerted to pull more people out of the wreckage of the tragic crash.
Mujahid affirmed that more than 70 ambulance vehicles were deployed at once to the scene of the tragic accident.
Initial reports said the death toll reached 28 people, and dozens others injured. However, the ministry later updated these figures to be 36 dead and 123 wounded and more ensuing.
The head of the ambulance services in the city's western sector, Dr. Mohamed Abu Homs, confirmed that the death toll rose to 36.
The incident took place after a train coming from Cairo, the capital of Egypt, collided with another train coming from Port Said in Khorshid area.
There was no immediate information on what had caused the collision.
Abu Homs said he fears the death toll and the number of injured could rise further.
Hospitals in Alexandria announced state of emergency to receive more injured. Bloods banks were addressed to immediately provide more sacks of bloods at such critical emergency.
