The head of Cairo University, Gaber Nassar, said Saturday that the January 25 anniversary would be a public holiday, adding that Cairo University, along with other public Universities would be closed to avoid potential protests. He said the Supreme Council of Universities, in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, was applying tight security measures on January 24 and 25. Surveillance cameras had been installed and there would be police patrols. The head of Ain Shams University, Hossam Essa, said that no students would be allowed on the campus on Sunday as exams had already been completed. Universities throughout Egypt have been the scene of fierce clashes between students and security forces following the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. Hundreds of students were detained on violence related charges.
